Art is created from the collision of truth and fiction.
It pours out of a photograph into consciousness, like a river flowing into the sea.
What is truth and what is fiction? Each person must decide for themselves and make a choice. Each choice progresses or regresses on the path of their journey through duality to enlightenment, changing outcomes and creating “reality”. Viewing a photograph triggers memories, raises the viewer's awareness and elevates their state of mind. Viewing two photographs next to each other recontextualizes the images, creates ambiguity and unlocks memories. To enlighten, we choose and then we might remember who we are.
The Illusion of Choice, contemplated by Plato, has been modeled by modern science's Double Slit experiment, revealing a higher level of meaning in a hidden quantum "reality”. Photons, the fundamental units of light that form photographs, exist in a state of potential and can go through one slit or another until they are observed. Is this potential an intelligence you can tap into? It's certainly not separate from the hologram -- it is waiting for you to reach the level of awareness to reach it.
The act of witnessing transforms the possibilities of a photon passing through a slit into a singular truth; it collapses the wave function of choice into the path through one slit. Taking a photograph collapses the 3-D wave into a 2-D representation of that time and space. When two images are presented, your choice makes you aware of this mechanism of the universe that generates reality. Science and AI understands these matters this way, but Art is a higher realm of the human mind.
As Stephen Shore pointed out in The Nature of Photographs, a photograph exists in physical, depictive and mental levels. On the physical level, regardless if it is a paper print or in digital form, the image has an existence and context in the viewer's mind. As a depiction, every image has flatness (since it is now collapsed into a 2-D space), a frame, time and focus. Individual images are shaped by decisions that frame not only what is seen but also what remains unseen, assuming the photographer chose to witness the scene. These decisions, conscious and unconscious, shape the essence of each photograph and are a reflection of the photographer's mind-nature. The creation of reality through thought is the quantum level and everything in the universe can transform with your thoughts because mind and matter are one and the same.
Photography is a practice of enlightenment, a meditation on the relationship between the seen and the unseen, the conscious and the subconscious. Each image is the manifestation of truth and fiction, and sometimes beauty. Two images, when placed side by side represent the Double Slit and embody the duality of choice. The images reflect different manifestations of the same objects and scenes, creating new contexts and triggering memories.
As you explore this collection, consider not only what lies within the boundaries of each frame and the interplay between the two images, but examine your own thoughts as well. Which choices will you make and how will seeing these images change your mind-nature and journey? One thought truly can determine the outcome.
When a choice is made, art, life and the universe converge, revealing the infinite potential within us all.
